no it is very important to figure out how to built image. it will save u a lot a lot of time.
of course this thing can not work all the time, specially if you are a beginning artist. But anyway try to think about want you want to see there.
This image was done very fast in about 30 min. no actual details but the concept is there. and the color gamma probably too.
